Liam's Nursery

Kindred Home Liam's Nursery Design

"Come on-a my house, my house I'm gonna give a you figs and dates and grapes and cakes eh..." we have owned our home for FOUR years, and I am just so excited to finally be welcoming you in to share my first complete room renovation on the blog. We've done so much work at our house, but I have never made the time to share all the before and after photos. Well, that's all changing now!

When we found out Liam would be joining our family I was ecstatic to design a nursery for him. I've really honed my style over the years and knew exactly how I wanted the room to look and feel. We've spent countless hours in this room feeding, playing, and changing diapers. Giving it the love and attention it needed before Liam arrived made welcoming him home so special.

BEFORE

Kindred Home Nursery Design Before PicI'm a sucker for a good before and after pic and I know you are too! Mike and I dug up these pics from former real estate listings for our house. Our house has changed hands a lot; it was built in 1955, and including us there have been seven owners, which is pretty remarkable in a community where many of our neighbors have been in their homes for decades. The photo above was two owners ago, the one below is what we saw on our walk-through. Before I started uploading photos of Liam's nursery I was second guessing myself, wondering if perhaps his room wasn't "done." Then I saw these before photos and took in the transformation, which reassured me that his room is more than done! It's exactly what I envisioned - the cozy, calming space I envisioned.

AFTER

Kindred Home Liam's Nursery DesignThis is what we see when we walk by Liam's bedroom everyday. Just kidding, it's not usually this clean. The floor is usually covered in toys and overflowing with laundry waiting to be folded. I'll admit, not everything is ideal for a kids room, but I would rather Liam learn to differentiate between the toys and the decorations, and I don't mind moving things out of his way when we're playing. He's into everything these days so we have to keep our eyes on him at all times anyway!

Kindred Home Liam's Nursery Design Bookshelves
One thing that worked out really well when I was designing this space is how the window configuration naturally lent itself to creating a focal point with the book shelves. I love how these bookshelves turned out. I purchased floating shelves from Restoration Hardware, but I wasn't convinced they flowed with the design of the room. Instead, my dad and I built these shelves. I have two in Liam's room and one in his play space. I followed a DIY guide posted by my friend Shelby, you can find her post here. My dad is a contractor of 40+ years and we modified her instructions slightly, but not in any significantly noteworthy way.

Books, books, and more books. My mom threw me a book party, and I have to say that I loved Liam's baby shower but I preferred the book party. I was able to connect with people one-on-one, and we got some amazing books from friends and family. I'd be happy to share our favorites sometime!Kindred Home Liam's Nursery Design

Kindred Home Liam's Nursery DesignWhen we found out we were having a baby boy I knew I wanted a blue nursery, but I wanted to balance that out with white and green, which I pulled in through art and plants (both living and faux)! The walls are painted 3/4 up in Farrow & Ball's Parma Gray. And this amazing rug is from Wayfair, you can find it here.

Kindred Home Liam's Nursery DesignRight before the coronavirus pandemic my grandparents moved to Florida permanently. As they were moving out of their townhouse I asked my Grandma if I could have this picture of my Grandpa (below) - I knew I wanted to put it in Liam's room. When I was little my Grandpa would pick me up from school, take me for ice cream, and sing along to Frank Sinatra. My Grandpa is from Sicily, and I swear he's the long-lost fourth tenor. He even sang *a cappella* at our wedding. He's in his eighties now and has dementia. It's sad, but this picture reminds me of him at his best. Remarkably, he continues continues to enjoy singing despite his declining memory. "Where words fail, music speaks." - Hans Christian Anderson.
